Rendezvous IV - San Antonio, TX - May 20-24, 2009

Just arrived home and thought I better post before someone else does the same thing as Bobo did to his car. DO NOT APPLY RAINX TO ANY OF THE PAINTED FINISH ON YOUR CARS. It will eat the paint. My last stop for the morning was at the detail shop for Red Noland Cadillac. Eric, the shop manager told me to have a bottle of 409 and a micro fiber cloth with me on the trip and when ever I stop to spray the bugs with the 409 and wipe them off with the micro fibre cloth. 409 will not harm the finish on the car. Rainx is a petroleum based product and it will eat right thru the clear coat and the paint. It tells you in the directions on the bottle not to get it on any painted surface. First Robin

To add to First Robin's post: I'm a huge fan of the Mr Clean-type sponges, but NOT for the car! I use them on pinball playfields but only before I plan on buffing them out with a polishing compound to remove the fine scratches they cause. I know they appear to be only "foam", but they are abrasive! It is fine to use on very hard surfaces (glass), but the manufacturer does not recommend them for use on softer surfaces (specifically, non-factory tinted glass or any glossy plastic surface).

Thanks Ruthie for finding this new product, I plan to check it out for sure as summer is when they work on the roads in Colorado and of course we will soon be having the May Flys which are really thick. I hope that is the product Bob used and not the RainX for the windshields.

That sounds like a great product, RA! Should we really apply it before heading to Texas? We only have little flying bugs up here.... :chuckle unless, of course, you hit a deer!

I have Deer Alerts on both of my vehicles and yes, they do work. I have silver on silver and black on black so you really don't notice them. You can buy them at Wal Mart, cheap protection!

Not to worry I used what Ruthie found in a foam spray and was easy to apply, but thanks for the concern. I'll probably have too have the front end painted when I get back anyway so if RainX does any damage............O well.

Call rainx 1 800 number tell them what happen and if there is a remedy to get it off. I am sure there is you havent had it on there that many days.

OK, Fred, I e-mailed them since it's to late to call today. I guess we will find out one way or another. I used the new foam 2-in-1 glass cleaner and rain repellent.

It says right on the box that the Mister Clean sponges should not be used on a car.

Today Show San Antional River Walk

I was watching the "Today Show" this morning and they announced that they were doing a special on San Antonio River Walk and vacationing there. This will be shown on "May 5, 2009". I think it will be nice to see and maybe even show us interesting activities that we may want to do.

Here is a product made by Rain X ...
http://www.rainx.com/Tips_Information/News/New_Bug_Tar_Shield.aspx

Maybe this is what was really meant to begin with? It sounds harmless ....

I looked for the Bug Tar Shield at Wal Mart this morning but they do not seem to stock it. I read the label on the new Rain X for the windshields and nothing is said about getting it on the painted surface. My bottles are small and you squeeze it onto the windshield and then spread it with a paper towel or cloth to cover the entire windshield. They have changed the packaging a lot and the bottles are sooooo much bigger. I did buy a new bottle of 409 and wished I could have found a smaller spray bottle, it is way to big to bring on the trip. Guess I will have to find a smaller spray bottle and fill it to bring with me.

All this may be true and I've read it on the box, but have used it on my 04 and 06-V on the bugs on the bumper, hood, back of mirrors and the windshield and I have nothing bad to show for using it. Granted I only used it on the trips for RI, RII and RII and don't use it at any other times, that maybe why I haven't had any problems with the paint.
BTW Here is a response from RainX below.
The Rain-X 2 in 1 Glass Cleaner and Repellent is meant to be used on
pure glass only. This product contains a certain amount of isopropyl
alcohol and silicone polymers that may, over time, compromise the
clear coat finish. We would recommend that you simply wash your
vehicle to remove the product. We also recommend that you use Rain-X
" Bug and Tar Shield" to ease removal of bugs on your vehicle's
painted surfaces in the future.

Thanks guys for this important information, I will wash the car this weekend and hopefully I haven't done any damage to the clear coat.:pat:

Sounds like a GREAT product, but I can't find anywhere here that carries it. All I find in the stores is Bug & Tar Pre Wash Gel... which is an entirely different product. I even called RainX and they couldn't help me either... I couldn't even purchase any online!! Has anybody found this?

RainX Bug and Tar Repelant

I have not been able to find this product in Colorado Springs either.

Found the Bug & tar revover.........but

But it's like Ruthie found online. Kragen Auto has this product. ($5.95) I'll bring it with me for anyone who wants George to wash their car. Just have to put the gel on the area that has the most bugs and it washes off very easy with no hard abrasive sponges, and won't hurt the clear coat or take the wax off either. Ask me, I'll share...........unless I'm running out.:D

Well .... hurray and hallelujah! It is just a 3 week wait until R4! The MM's will hardly be recovered and off we all go to Texas! :rocker:
