Dan, a top relearn may just cure this or identify a impending problem before it gets worse.either way good luck. :) Al

I called Hatty the other day he live up in Harrisburg about the Cadillac dealer up there they used to be Stutliff now they are owned by Falkner, but still have same staff! I'm still having issue with the rear end after changing the rear fluid 2 times, when turning sharp the front tires have this gripping, jumping, hopping almost like a 4 wheel drive feeling when it's locked in 4 wheel drive on a hard payment! I just had it in for PA inspection, oil change& engine lite was on and running rough at cold starts, they did a reprogram computer but next day after I had it back the engine light was back on, they said the rear plates need changed , but The tech in at Falkner said to change oil again and add the additive even though the they claim the oil already has it in it! I'm confused what to do Harrisburg is an hour away they offer no loaner vehicle ( which they did before) just offer a Enterprise car that I'd pay for and they charge $104 an hour labor. Now with Wendy working her new job from 9:30am - 6pm makes it rough to just drop it off. Renn Kirby GM Dealer in Gettysburg is only 15 minutes away, with $87 labor but no certified Xlr tech but do have a tech for NORTHSTAR Motors. York has a certified XLR tech also, 40 minutes away but said GM considers it normal for the rear to do this when turning sharp, and last checked they where $104 labor too. Stuck between a Rock and a Hard space! Don't know what I want to do just spent at Renn Kirby $324.

Dan... If it were me, I'd take it to an XLR certified tech and spend the extra $16/hour labor. I know I wouldn't trust mine to a non-XLR certified tech, unless there wasn't one close. Good luck...

Thx Rod
I know what correct answer is. I just don't like it! Lol

Dan, the frt tires will do that on certain roads when turning slow, normal. my rearend was changed 3 times and finally the third time w/the new type fluid which doesn't need the addative did the trick.of course w/ the temps now it may still growl till it get's moving around in there. Al

The new tire I'm running are NOT run flats in fact they are a racing tire by Michelin - Pilot Super Sport! They have very little tread pattern just straight grooves and this may cause some of the problem also!
I'm wonder if anyone ever had the rear end plates switched and it repaired this problem? This is what they are telling me I need to do to fix it now, Also I'm concerned about the repair because the warranty I have will cover this until it runs out in 2 years from this May! So if it's needs done might as well do while they will cover it!

The rear end plates their talking about are the clutch plates so both axles turn. The chatter you are getting is from the clutch plates not gripping correctly. They've replaced the fluids to eliminate metal/clutch material contamination. If it still chatters that would likely say your clutch plates are worn.
If you have the warranty use it. It's a pretty extensive job they'll have to drop the rear center section. Good luck.

WTF!...Unbelievable! I was swapping out the new sensors one by one and taking readings and recording the counts again(the folding top position sensor). All readings look almost identical. The first 2 new sensors once again failed with top not secure message. The 3 sensor I tried seemed to hesitate for a few seconds when the top stowed on the relearn procedure...but then FINALLY advanced to next stage when rear tonneau extended and finally took the relearn.YAY! I am still clueless as to why the other new sensors did not work, but everything works fine now! After $150 to the dealer that was "stumped",a new FTM,and 3 new sensors...it works! I just wish that I knew what the hell happened for it to start working again. I tried this before and they all failed before with top not Sucure. I do have the shop manuals as well($200).Oh well, I am so happy right now. Thanks again to all who responded and tried to help! Hugs and kisses.

Do you own a VOM? (Volt/Ohm Meter aka multimeter). I have made an assumption that new sensors will not all fail together. However.

If you measure the resistance between terminals A and C, that should be fixed no matter where you turn the sensor. Between A & B and B & C you should get a reading that varies smoothly from zero to the A-C reading as you turn the sensor. (The A-B and B-C readings will be opposite.) Some pots don't travel the full scale, so it might run from a little above zero to a little below the full reading. Some pots use a log scale (ie are not linear), what you want is smoothness. Many pots gather dust/oxidation with lack of use, causing lack of smoothness in the reading. A lack of smoothness could (will) cause invalid (not permitted) readings. As most pots are designed to be self cleaning, the act of wiping the sensor backwards and forwards (many times) is sometimes able to restore smoothness if it is lacking. The best types of pot are optical (or other non-contact types) ones, but I have no reason to infer that Cadillac are using such sensors in the XLR roof mechanism, ie the XLR roof ones are plain old wiper on resistor types. Thus it could be that you have purchased old stock and what they need is being turned manually (not fitted to the roof) many times to see if they start working properly again.

A suggestion.

Dan, my tires are Michelin non runflats also, this happens more on smooth surfaces such as a street or driveway that has been sealed.happens more/worst as the tire gets wider as on a corvette. Al

Dan my rear sounded like I had rocks in it when I first started up and backed out of my driveway. My Cadillac dealer replace the fluid with the new fluid that had the additive in it and that solved my problem. My dealer charges $110 an hour.

A Chevy dealer that works on Vettes can change that fluid too. My Caddy dealer wanted $135 to turn my front rotors. The Chevey dealer did it for $68.

As for the top sensors, I was IN my trunk today looking at everything without lowering the black cloth and I wasn't able to see a sensor. I'm going to go Caddy to have my Bose fixed, it stopped sending any sound. I'll ask the parts guy to show me one so I'll know what to look for.

Stormshadow good luck. I'm sure you'll end up fixing the problem.

Thanks

But I have no noise just the gripping, chattering, jumping slipping feel with full right & left turns which feels like the front tires :dunno: I don't know if this is the same issue that you are talking about. Never less my aftermarket warranty will cover the repair either way I will need to pay for the oil fluid so might as well get it done right, had the oil changed 2 times and don't want to spend another $105 and maybe still need to do it again which will cost me for the oil again

Hmmm...

Just thinking... I never had that jumping/slipping when I ran my stock size (235/50/18) Pirelli non-run-flats, but I do now with the stock "V" rims running the Michelin AS/3s (255/40/19) on all 4 corners. I have it in Red Noland's shop now for a wheel alignment and to fix a small oil leak on the timing chain cover (which is plastic, BTW ). I'm hoping the alignment will address the herky/jerky business, which likely is exacerbated by the wider tires. JMO.

Tim

Thanks!

:blinzel: Thanks Stella this is pretty much a done deal decision that I have already made! I believe what you say is why I decide not to just change the oil again! I rather fix it right now then go thought it again later, plus spend another $105 again. It also feels like when I pull out on gravel while turn you can feel both wheel grabbing from one side too other! Thanks for your input!
:rocker: This is one of the reasons this forum is so great, that with the interaction of other peoples information and XLR owners experience's that's helps us in need of making a right decision for awesome rides!

Thanks Again!

Sorry Tim but mine has had 2 alignment since I owned her, once after new front shocks the 2nd after the new tires. These are Michelins now, Goodyear Tires are standard recommended size and it's done this since I owned her! :dunno:

Yeah, Dan, I'm just speculating and hoping. I get 'er back Monday afternoon, so I guess I'll know then, eh? All I know for sure is that the ONLY change I made was the rims/tires. FWIW

This thread is failing miserably. How does a discussion about tires, axles and wheels get injected into a topic about folding top sensors?!! Please start a new thread to help those with relevant issues. Thread-jacking like this only serves to hide information others may be looking for under a thread title.

Well CC you can blame for that! Way back in this tread Al & I was chatting and end up with 2 different chats in the same post! So I guess it all my fault!

I'm not interested in fixing the blame, just the problem. If we can keep threads on-topic, it will be to the benefit of us all.

I agree will try to keep this in mind when posting!!
