Welcome to the Cadillac XLR Forums!

Fall Drive 2009

Thanks, Bruce.

My son sounds pretty excited about it too. I think we will plan on going.

To any others going: If anyone is heading down to Madison, IN from the Chicagoland area (or passing through), let me know when you would be leaving; I'd love to caravan down with ya's.

Hope there is a room available still for us.

Dave

If the Hillside Inn runs out of rooms, I'm sure we can find more in "New Madison".

We may have a new XLR owner joining us on our drive. I helped deliver a Crystal Red Platinum XLR today to a very nice woman. I told her about our group and the Fall Drive. She is hoping to join us. I'm working on getting her on this forum as well.

We are in for the Madison trip. Made reservations this afternoon. Look forward to meeting you all.

Dave

It looks like we are going to have a great group this year!
Right now we have 8 XLRs signed up.:rocker:

Dave, it will be nice to have you and your wife join us.

Hi Dave

Just joined the group and was reading about this Fall Trip... sounds like a blast. The date sounds good (will just be coming back from a trip up to Door County - but love XLR road trips). I was thinking about bringing my 15yo son (he loves my XLR); would that be appropriate? Not sure how "wild" these trips could be. I'd love to meet other XLR owners. I'm north or Chicago, near WI border.
Let me know. Thanks.

Dave

Hello Dave. Welcome to the forum! I'm really excited that there is someone who is actually close to Wisconsin. And... Door County is one of my favorite places in the state.

I wanted to let you know that I hope to bring my daughter along on the Madison trip. (I always get so excited thinking we're talking about Madison, WI... but maybe next year.) Julia just turned 20, but she came with me to North Carolina this spring and did just fine with the 'old folks' on the trip. We do get a little rowdy, but nothing a teenage boy can't handle. That's just about our maturity level anyway, no matter what our ages. Guess that's how we got our nickname "Midwest Mauraders"

Looking forward to meeting you and your son.

Continue on 56/156 to Dagaz Acres for a quick trip down the zipline (www.dagazacres.com) then on to Aurora where we can pick up 350 West to Osgood, IN (53 miles) and the Osgood Grub Co. for lunch. Then continue north on US-421 to east on IN-229 to north on IN-229 to Oldenburg, IN (20 miles). Oldenburg is just north of I-74, which is a convenient route for everyone to head back home. Please drive safely! Follow the leader.

Sunday lunch: Noon
The Osgood Grub Company 406 N Buckeye St Osgood, IN
You’ll agree with me– This is the best restaurant I have ever been to. The lunch buffet runs from 11:00 am to 1:00 or 1:30 pm and it is absolutely the best food I have ever eaten (but don't tell my Mom). Note the metal sculpture in the parking lot that the “Australian guy” made. See below, from www.associatedcontent.com:
Good Eats, Antiques, Old Hippies, and Posy Poke Soap Capital!

If you find yourself passing through Osgood in the southeastern portion of the state of Indiana you might want to hit the hot spots along the main drag. Just be careful not to blink and be sure to heed the single traffic light at the intersection of State Routes 350 and 421.

Since I brought up that corner, be
sure to come through about lunch time. The Osgood Grub Co. has a tasty home cooked buffet reminiscent of good farm cooking. The restaurant is decorated with eclectic antiques, taxidermy critters, and signage from now defunct Osgood businesses. You can eat all you want for lunch and tip the waitress for less than seven dollars on weekdays. Be sure to check out the fantastic metal sculpture that surrounds the building and parking lot.
After you've filled up on lunch head
south on State Route 421. Two blocks down is Rail Road Avenue. Sitting right on the corner just before the railroad tracks is a funky little antique shop "slash" music store. Be sure to ask about the "Old Hippie" who runs the place with his married to the "Old Hippie" wife. Ask her about the hand made Posy Poke goats' milk soap that is a true sniffing and bathing experience. The store is a neat little treasure trove of bargains, collectibles, affordable vintage items and antiques. Next door you will find Tin Crow Primitives, and the Shepherd's Daughter which produces some of the best grubby cinnamon candles the world has to offer.

By now your food from the Grub
should have settled, so hop in the car and drive the opposite direction on 421 north until you once again go through that infamous traffic light. Watch for a little coffee shop on the left named Di Giovanni's Coffee House where you can get a too die for cup of premium flavored coffee. There is a beautiful wall mural, painted by the Jac-Cen-Del art department that is well worth the trip in to get a look at. Sit, sip, and be a mural connoisseur.

Give the coffee fifteen minutes and you will be feeling like a little more shopping, so head to the Volmer House Bed and Breakfast. Drive south again through that same traffic light, cross the tracks and watch for it about two blocks on the left across from the Catholic Church. The bed and breakfast is a lovely renovated Victorian home. They have an old carriage house they have transformed into a gift shop. There is some really pretty hand made jewelry at affordable prices, great for wearing or gift giving. They also have soaps, candles, and other yummy goods for sale

Oldenburg Info:

Oldenburg was founded in the late 1830s by a group of German Settlers. Incorporated in 1869, Oldenburg is called the "Village of Spires" because of its churches and religious educational institutions. The town proudly preserves its religious, cultural, and architectural heritage. The old stone and brick structures, clapboard houses, tin facades and cornices, bilingual street signs, and the combination of shops and residences attest to the Old World influence. The settlement rapidly took on a German flavor with the in-migration of German Catholics from Cincinnati.

Sunday Afternoon, after lunch:

Wander through Osgood, head north and wander through Oldenburg, or head home with the memories of another great weekend with the Midwest Marauders!

Drive safely – See you there!
NOTES:
Most restaurants and attractions in Madison (except the park) are within walking distance of our hotel.
If you have a FRS (Family Radio Service) radio, please bring it. It helps us all to communicate on caravans.
There will probably be one “Potty Stop” on our drive up to Osgood. Use your FRS Radio if you require one!
Please drive safely in any caravan! Don’t “hold back” just to “gun it”! However, if you do like to drive slower, please stay towards the rear of the group. Use your GPS and meet us if you’d prefer.

Please provide feedback. I couldn't find info on our meeting place last year, so that's why it's "TBD".

Any and all comments or suggestions are appreciated. Sorry for, and don't get freaked out by, the "legal-ese" at the bottom, but we need to keep Rob (and ourselves) liability-free!!!

IF YOU DON'T READ ALL OF MY PREVIOUS POST, please note that there is a "Soup, Stew, Chili and Brew" Festival going on in Madison on Saturday! There's something for everyone!

Doing what we did last time is perfect for me--driving, eating, drinking, eating, sleeping, driving etc.:lol::lol:

We should go through the state park, looks like a nice scenic drive.

Hi All!

I'm working on an intinerary for our Madison trip - I hope to have it posted soon.

In the meantime, here is the thread from our trip last year. Take a look, and reminisce or see what you have to look forward to!!!

That can be done, either before or after lunch. I know lunches tend to make groups split up, so I was planning on a "photo op" after lunch, perhaps at the "Little Cliffy Falls" area of the park, after everyone finishes eating. I need to get there first to check it out first to find a good location; maps and instructions will be provided at lunch.

The park looks like a beautiful place! There are some great trails (some short, some long, some challenging, and some easy). It would probably be worth it to give yourselves an hour or so and pick a route. Again, maps will be provided by me at lunch.

Great job Rich. You had it posted as I was doing my first post. Supa & I will be going down to Indy Friday night, as before.(Fishers?) Let us know if that is your plan. We will probably have Quinn & Barbie do the same. I think Dave & his son are driving down early Saturday and may try and meet up with us in Indy.

Wow, looks like a fun filled weekend. I got a room this afternoon at Hillside, so my son, Devin and I are good to go. Devin and I want to go to his high school homecoming game Friday night, so we will head out EARLY Saturday morning and meet up with everyone in Indy. Just let me know where and I'll plug it in to the Nav.
We're both pretty excited.
Let me know if anyone else is heading down to Indy Sat. morning from Chicagoland.

Dave, don't forget you are an hour behind us. You'll have to leave your area very early on Saturday. We plan on leaving Indy @ 8:30 am eastern time. We can wait for you if needed.

Thanks Rich for the info.

If we have the time, we may want to drive along the Ohio to the Markland Dam and Locks. Maybe we can fit this in before dinner, like last year.

Kathy and I may drive down to Madison this weekend and do some recon. We can check out the park while we are down there.

Northern group info

The northern group will leave the Fishers area around 8:30 am Saturday Oct. 10th and take I-465 east to I-65 south (exit 53B). We'll make a stop @ the rest area just north of Columbus,IN. We'll pick up highway 46 @ Columbus (exit 68). Go east through Columbus to pick up highway 7 south to Madison, IN.

Kevin: If Julia can come, we won't be leaving Madison (WI) until after 5 or 6 on Friday, so arriving in Fishers late. Where are you guys staying?

Our own fall drive

David and I took a little fall drive of our own last Sunday. We left home, drove North for about 1/2 hour to Richland Center, then West through the apple orchards and vineyards near Gays Mills in the hills of the driftless area that turn into the bluffs along the Mississippi. We drove along the river for about 25 miles to Prairie du Chien, had dinner, lost $20 at the casino river boat and headed home. It was really pretty. We're going to do it again in a few weeks when the fall colors come out.

Here's a few pictures. Wished you guys were with us. Made me excited for our upcoming trip!
