I went to install all my new bluetooth gear and discovered (I think) that my 04 doesn't have the XM stereo module. For those with experience with the XM, can you please have a look at these photos and let me know if I have the module?
Hard to tell definitely, but being that was the only option available on the '04 models (meaning the car had to be ordered with it) I would say you don't have it. There was also an update to the antenna system that changed it from analog to digital that hed to be done, which probably means you don't have that, as you don't have the module. Probably best to check with your dealer, but the pigtail may be there to add the module.
I don't see XM on the face screen shot
I believe on my 05 it shows XM1/ XM2 right under FM 2 and above WX on the left side of the screen. I will check it later for you.
THE ONLY WAY TO ADD IT!
I WOULD THINK YOU NEED TO CHANGE OUT THE WHOLE SYSTEM.
The other telltale sign that the car has XM was the "wart" antenna on the trunk. I think you just need the module to get your radio to recognize XM; the analog to digital change was for OnStar only (I had that done, but have since quit the OnStar program).
It should be easy to add, if you can find the module...

If your car was originally a Canadian delivered car then it did not have XM radio. I have a document entitled Dealer Intro & tech publication dated Sept 2003 and it states:
<o> </o>IntegratedNavigation/Radio/DVD/Web-Enabled<o></o> The XLR is equipped withperhaps the most sophisticated - yet easy to use - entertainment andinformation system in its segment. Via a 7-inch (17.8 cm) color touch screenmounted in the upper center console, occupants have access to DVD navigation;an eight-speaker world-class Bose® audio system with a six-CD in-dash changerand digital signal processing modes; XM satellite radio broadcasting (notavailable in Canada); and DVD movies and entertainment (in park position only.)
<o></o> BTW: if your car was a Canadian delivered car you can contact GM Canada's historical department and they will send you the build listing for you car along with the information of who the original dealer was etc. Even includes how many were imported into Canada that year and usually how many in the same colour and equipted like yours. Call the archive department at 1-888-467-6853 and they will send you a form to fill out, I don't remember how much it costs now (at least $75. or more) but when it comes to classic cars, it is invaluable documentation to have.
This may be interesting. My car had XM and I used it often. One day of started to glitch and then dispersed entirely. Now I have an FM 2 button where it use to be.
So the radio does in fact detect the XM device and changes the layout of your head unit screen to provide functionality.
