Does any one have any experience programming the universal home remote for use with a fixed code system (one with dip switches)? I've tried the method in the manual several times and am not having any luck.

I programmed mine using the instructions in the manual when I first started driving it and haven't had to touch it since; that was 3 1/2 years ago...

Call Cadillac Customer Service and they will give you a phone number to call for help. Some doors will not work with this system (such as my door) and if that happens they will send you a receiver to mount by your opener that will work.

I had no problem with my rolling code unit. But the fixed code unit is a different story. I have read on a different forum to use a ruler to get the three button press to happen at the same time. They said it was very picky about seeing them pressed at the same time, not just made at the same time.

I'll try that in the morning.

Our XLR had no problem with gate code or garage door code .... the Escalade connected to the garage door and will not connect to the gate ... :pat: . It's a pain.

For a few years GM stopped using a genuine Homelink (which has learning capabilities) with a [expletive deleted] cheap unit from Lear Car2U. You can tell which you have by 1 light = homelink, 3 lights = Lear.

The Lear cannot acquire codes from a different remotes; it can only be used with rolling-code openers that have a "learn" button or fixed-code openers.

My 2004 (homelink) was easily programmed for our community gate. My 2008 (lear) would not. At first, Lear offered a replacement pre-programmed sun visor, and when they could not get the parts to make one, they eventually got my community's approval to install an additional, fixed-code receiver. They refused to also fix up the second gate for only one car, but fortunately I found an annoyed Buick owner and now that there were two of us pestering them they fixed the back gate as well.

If you have any problems getting a Lear to work, call their number in the owner's manual or on their website -- Lear Car2U System: How to program my security entry gate

And stay on their case until they sort it out for you.

Success kind of lights stay on.

I got the Universal Home Remote (Lear) to work!

The biggest problem was that where the manuals, both the owners and the online Lear, state to hold all three buttons in for 3 seconds to enter programming mode. Wrong! Mine worked with a momentary press of no more than 1 second. I found it by luck. After that the directions were right. There is one more three button press to exit programming mode. I just did one second there as well.

The down side, and I can't believe it is related, I can not turn off the map and/or foot lights. Not with it running or off, not with the doors opened or closed, not moving forward or stopped. Not after 30 minutes of waiting. I had something similar once before. I was not able to do more trouble shooting today so I disconnected the battery and will revisit it tomorrow.

The passengers mirror was also "skipping" at the end of travel when I started the car. Something to do with the memory settings I guess. Perhaps an overnight reset will help.

Thanks for posting that info, BoughttheXLR. I have an '08 GM & gave up on programming it to work with a gate to a yard. Thought it was operator error (mine) instead of operator error by the manufacturer. Your info makes me feel better! - about me at least.

I think given what happened with Phrede (just in case it is related) I'm sticking with getting out & pushing the button for the gate, since that's available and I don't use that gate very often. Otherwise, what a pain!

Been there, done that. You accidentally pressed the button with sortof a light on it just above the options and reset buttons to the right of the gauges.

I don't have to get out since I do have a keypad for my gate, but I just want it to work like it is supposed to. One of the faults of the engineer in me. Stuff that doesn't work just bugs the sh*t out of me. A major character flaw, I know.

I really do not think the light thing is not related as something similar happened before. I think it has something to do with not shutting the door and starting the car, then tuning it off? Not sure yet but I really think it has to do with something like that. I wonder if I would get a prize from GM if I find the sequence of the bug?:dunno:

I didn't mention that thru the whole thing the top was down. So tomorrow I'll take it outside and put the roof up to do a reset.
It is hailing here right now and I do not want a textured finish. I wish I could remember which way the map light push button is for off. In or out? How do you remember? Or are you like me and don't care, hit the button until you get what you want.

The other thing to remember is that it is not always powered make sure the leds are coming on.

I've learned the hard way not to trust the system to turn the lights out. Every now and then things get confused and disconnecting the battery for a while usually fixes it.

You are absolutely right. Thanks. I posted earlier but my internet was down. I reconnected the battery and everything was fine. Of course, since the button is just a momentary input.

The give away is that the green circle on the engine start push button stays on even after everything else has cycled down.

BTW the in position on the map lights is off. I'll never remember it :D

I'm no engineer but I'm with you on wanting things to work right!

One of my favorite non-working things is the voice control on my '08 GM. I messed with it a few times & no matter what command I gave or how, it said "System defrost on" to me & turned that on. Although it's amusing to have my car argue with me about what I want it to do, it would be really nice if that worked.

At least the homelink fix was easier ...

Yes, Voice command is disappointing The most I use mine for is accidental button hits where the car sez the command is unknown. I expect to be disabling or moving the function when I get into my next set of changes with the Bluetooth.

There are those things on the car that seems like they would work better on a flagship vehicle.

I to have not been able to program Universal Home Remote System following instructions for US and Canada. Real bummer.

I had mine programmed by my sis who worked at Cadillac awhile back. But then when I had another vehicle done. It lost the program. So now both vehicles are not programmed. But I have the garage door opener in my xlr since I only have a single car garage. The xlr is in the garage while the other vehicle stays outside

Critical Warning for All Owners!

Be aware that we now live in the 21st century where very little is as it seems.

Unbeknownst to me while driving through Clarksdale, Ms. Saturday getting my monthly blues fix I inadvertently had left Siri active on my Iphone. When I asked my car to locate a closeby rib joint Siri overheard the query and quickly answered. The car was a couple of seconds late and gave me another choice.

Needless to say a hellacious high tech hissyfit commenced.

The car got totally ****ed and threatened to shut itself down.

Siri found a very negative XLR review on Cars.com and yelled it out loud and very clear.

Next thing I know I'm on the shoulder of Hwy. 61 calling Northstar to get them to apologize to the X for me. Siri called my wife and asked if she was with me or was my passenger someone else.

Remote Control...fuggehdaboutit!

.

Finally got my universal visor remote garage door opener reprogrammed. Took around 20 min with the help of my association maintenance guys help. We had to re read the book about 5x but finally got it to work.
