Kenwood DNX893S in the XLR

When I was trying to get the stock head fixed/replaced, I can pretty much look at my dash and it starts pulling it self out.

So again when I came home tonight my car was in more pieces, with the waterfall out & various pieces of plastic trim that go around the passenger seat out. BUT, we have power and sound and it sounds GOOD!

Perhaps you can begin a service that helps other XLR owners make this important technology innovation. Every element in these cars is innovative and strikingly beautiful-- If I could be guaranteed a clean install with the set up you describe, the $1,800 is a small price to pay. Checking with several tech/car garages in my area--- no one wants to make the conversion--- "too complicated." What's to be done? Seems like an opportunity for some creative thinking and discussion. If you haven't, read this entire thread. It details how to make this install. All the information you need to do this change out is here.

I can give testimony to that[emoji16]I absolutely think this is the single best upgrade for this vehicle. The sound quality is so much better and of coarse the modern amenities such as Bluetooth, Up to date Nav and a backup camera!

I'm convinced... lost patience with the FCC approved anemic FM modulators that require constant "engineering" to maintain some level of acceptable audio, and the original disc driven GPS is sad. Is it possible to purchase the components and install Pioneer system myself? We live in mid-coast Maine, and no one local will touch the car. Appreciate the feedback. James.

Yes all parts purchased thru amazon or eBay

There a various number of members here who have now completed the install so looking under threads App4radio and Kenwood , parts and wiring diagrams are available so pull the trigger and happy swap out. If you get stuck just ask for help [emoji16]

Thanks so much.... I'm new to XLR ownership, but have owned previously owned (aka: used) Cadillacs my entire driving life. GM's approach to audio systems has always been unusual-- with separate amplifier and tuner "head" units all the way back to the stone age where my '56 Sedan Deville had a multi-vacuum tube amplifier under the passenger side dash driving a separate AM radio (with "station seeking WONDERBAR"). I owned an Allante that had four amplifier/speaker units that would slowly die overtime along with a single disc cd player. SO I concur with those who write passionately about GM's approach to these issues. Yet, its interesting to note that in the newly minted "Cadillac Magazine," there's a section on the XLR as part of Cadillac prideful legacy to innovation.

They won't touch the car because there are no parts catalogs that specify XLR
The stereo shop I went with had never done one of these cars, but with the information contained on this forum, were able to do the install, and no, there's no stock radio in the trunk.
A shop worth it's salt can use the information here and do it. I even had a backup camera installed in mine.

I can also throw out buying from crutchfield.com. That's where Mike bought from & was able to call them for help when he had a backup camera connection question. Great customer service. Beyond that, Mike's used the info on this thread plus messaging others who have done the install themselves when he needed clarification.

Currently he's working on installing the backup camera (the waterfall was out because he was hoping to route the wiring through there, no dice so it's going along the interior passenger side, under some of the plastic), & getting a good ground connection. Microphone is going above the rear view mirror, he ran the wire through the A pillar. Steering wheel control hook up is next on the list. GPS is picking up its signal using the OEM antenna, tested OnStar last night & it's also working.

Not a fast at home project - perhaps a little longer since he chose to solder together a number of the connections - install work started last weekend & he's been working an hour or so on it each night during the week. He's familiar with electrical work so that helps. And obviously a lot of the car needs to come apart ...

Lucky me - he gave me the car to begin with and now he's giving me an upgrade in it!

You've got great friends.... perhaps, for the "right remuneration," a travel/install service could be established.... "The electronic upgrade can be arranged through a week's house call at your home in your enclosed garage... you provide food, lodging, and hourly time and material wage at $0.00 dollars per hour, and we guarantee a custom install." Whaddaya think??? James

I'm thinking it's a labor of love so that it's unlikely Mike will be taking his show on the road ...

Although if he doesn't get my car put back together right I may revisit the road show concept (:chuckle kidding!)

Ta-dahhh!

Unbelievable how Mike put back all the wires & pieces pulled apart so you'd never know it happened!

Everything works, got my iPod set, steering wheel controls all work on it & the radio. There was some confusion from the steering wheel control co. (Axxess) between using the instructions that came with it & the XLR-specific ones on their web site. If you do this install yourself, got straight with the right customer service rep to use the XLR specific instructions.

While he was at it, Mike fixed an issue with the transmission gear selector lights on the console so they light up nice & bright now. Now he's finishing up the back up camera install.

Can't wait to get it all personalized & hit the road!

Congrats to you-- now that screen and the contemporary "read-out" matches the rest of the car's exquisite engineering.... I guess all of us XLR owners need a "Mike" in our lives. Happy day to you. James

Thanks - not quite all done yet, but Mike told me about the install work that "it's been an experience!"

Use Photoshop and make your own background wall paper to really personalize it

Saw your earlier pics where you did that & I'm already planning on it!
