Hello everyone, I have a 2008 base XLR and I scratched the applique (wood grained plastic piece that covers the button which opens the door). I purchased a new one and would like to install it. Can I just remove the armrest assembly to replace it or do I need to remove the compleat door panel? I really don't want to brake anything else to do this as these parts are very expensive. Any help would be great.
Thanks for your time.

If memory serves me correctly, the whole trim panel has to be removed. Then the armrest can be changed out. I'm pretty sure my Service Manuals got toasted in the fire back no 2/28/13, so at this time, I have to go by memory. I'm sure somebody else will pipe in as well (especially if I'm wrong...:chuckle:chuckle:blinzel:).

You are correct, Rod. The door panel has to be removed.

Ok here's is something I just recently saw. This isn't on the drivers armrest but on the passengers.

the second pic is probably better. Now it looks like scratch or someone chiseled and scrapped in 2 areas. But as I ran my hand and fingers over the area. It's looks worse then it really is. Because it's not rough. I think the wood was like that before they sealed it with the polymer. But I don't know. Does anyone that has a 06 infrared with the same Interrior color as mine, have this problem on the passengers door arm rest?

Hey Hawkeye... I don't think this is singular model year issue (If you could call it an issue) My center console has the same blemishes on the cup holder lid and until you posted this I thought maybe someone had repaired it but like you it's perfectly finished and sealed.

Yes after I posted this. I got to thinking and every piece of wood is different. Because I can't feel any roughness. I also was talking to granddaddy 05 and he reassured me also that every piece of wood is different.

I have that on the driver's door & gear shift. Someone knowledgeable about wood checked it out & told me it was wood dough. It kind of ticks me off in a car of this caliber they would (a) use wood dough instead of a decent replacement piece, & (b) not even do a good job matching the color between the wood & the wood dough (or using stain, etc.). I'd like to replace it but just haven't bothered looking into it.

Thanks xlrating. I just have noticed it on passenger side. I haven't really gone over all the wood trim. But I did check on the drivers side and it wasn't on that door. Next I'll check on the gearshift. But I agree with you. It kind of ticks me off in a car of this caliber they would (a) use wood dough instead of a decent replacement piece, If and when you decide to replace this "mistake". Please let me know how you did and how it turned out. I'll do the same if I do it before to much longer.

Quality Lapse

My '06 Light Platinum has the same wood color, AND the same kind of flaw on the driver's door handle. I had assumed that an applied fake wood pattern had just scratched off, although the finish is completely smooth. Thanks to y'all, I now know it was a lousy fix to a flaw in the wood . My blemish is the color of Plastic Wood, and doesn't match the wood worth a damn. I'm disappointed in the shoddiness of such a kludge, but also gratified to hear that it is real wood, albeit of questionable quality.

That's why we are all here. If we have a concern with our cars. Just post it on the site and someone will have answers.

Sadly, I didn't have to study too hard to find it. I got big Pillsbury Doughboy chunks of dough! Sticks out like a sore thumb.

Yep. To me unsatisfactory. I agree with your first post after my original. "Surprised they let these cars out with this mark on it".
