I recently changed my intake to the D3 Stage 1 & 2 setup.

PM sent, Cubby. This may be something I'd like to implement.
Smog in California requires Volant to be registered. I passed but not visually. The guy had no business looking under my hood but to late now. Volant says that they tried to register 3 1/2 years ago and have heard nothing. A lot of other set-ups have been registered, just not the XLR-V. They are contacting Sacramento on Monday to find out why they have not been registered.

Interesting Standby-V.
I just had my first smog check on my XLR in Dec. 2012 but I took off my Volant CAI and replaced it with the stock intake system and took it to my guy, that has done all my vehicles since 1985. At first just stood there in front of the XLR with his month opened at then ask, "What is this?"
I then had to give him a brief explanation about the car so he could better understand it and had to walk him through all the tests and safety inspection points. At first, he suggested I take it to the dealer because the didn't think he had the right equipment to do the smog test but I then pointed out that the engine was the same engine, the Northstar 4.6L, that was in Cadillacs for the past several years.
He then dug out his pre-2007 manuals and all the info he needed on the engine and also found all he needed on the base XLR!
The only problem he had was trying to get under the car to check the CATS. I then pointed out to him that he could see them by looking down through the engine compartment on each side of the engine and to look at the rest of the exchaust system by going to the back of the car and looking under it, toward the front to see all the rest of the system.
As soon as he looked unter the rear of the car exclaimed. "This is just like a Corvette!" Then I said, "I guess I should have told you right from the beginning that these cars were 'Hand built at the Corvette plant in Bowling Green, KY."
As far as looking under the hood, it is a requirement here in Ca. as part of the smog test to visually verify the emission system has not been tampered with and belts, hoses, brake system etc. are in good operating condition per the safety requirements.
The reason I took my Volant CAI off was the first XLR owner I meant had the same problem you had with his 2004 and just took it home and replaced it with the stock system then took it back and it passed OK on the visual retest.
So, I would suggest that you purchase a stock intake system, if you threw yours away, and just swap it out before your smog test.
I hope this information helps you and any other CA. Caddie owners.![]()
