Hey folks, this bushing kit link below is all you need to fix the shifter cable when you XLR will not shift from the dried up broken plactic bushing. Do like I did and buy 2 kits and see if the original one needs replaced now and keep the other one somewhere in your XLR for backup. Who knows when you will breakdown from this little tiny plastic bushing breaking and when this happens you may be dead on the spot. Then how long will it take a repair shop to order parts to repair, But if you already have this repair kit with you, it could be repaired almost right away, plus you will not need to be forced to buy a whole shifter cable, probably at GM Dealer cost of $100 bucks or more, because that's what they are going to tell you, you need to do to repair this problem! Not true...... Watch this video link below how simple it really is to fix, of couse you will need to get to the part under the car at the transmission shifter cable hook up, but hell let the repair shop do that!

Be prepared!

I bought two kits, one is in my XLR and the other is in my spare parts box, along with a spare shifter cable.

One of our members had their XLR sidelined by a broken cable during our PA trip a few years ago!

Cheap insurance!!!

Evidently, this shifter cable failure is an issue with quite a few other vehicles.

When I had my shifter cable getting replaced the shop had a Nissan there having the same thing done. It was about 10 year old car

shifter cable repair

I've been reading this thread about shifter cable repair. I was wondering if it's more likely for the cable bushing to break at the shifter or the tranny? I went on the bushing repair website and saw that they offer both bushings. It seems, based on what I've seen and read, that it's more likely to be the bushing at the shifter. Even though these bushings are inexpensive I don't want to purchase the ones at the tranny if they are not known to fail.

Based on my experience, I'd say the extra heat from the crossover exhaust pipe will cook the shifter bushing quicker. I also replaced the entire shifter cable instead of the bushings, well, just because.

I must be missing something. I have the same problem ( have a kit). Why not make a brass (or bronze) bushing and use a stainless steel bolt and lock nut? Plus a stainless washer on both sides?

Because the 15 cent bushing (GM cost)) last most times for 20 years. The cost to do it correct would add another 1$ to the cost of every car. Plus metal to metal will most likely wear out faster than the plastic.
