Pit Lane Contact Seals Corvettes' Fate in Classic Endurance Race
sebring3.jpg
SEBRING, Fla. - For many years, Sebring International Raceway was Corvette Racing's Bermuda Triangle, a place where strange things happened routinely. After seven victories at the classic circuit, Sebring was once again the team's nemesis in the 58th running of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. An improbable collision in the pit lane ultimately consigned the No. 3 Compuware Corvette C6. R to an eighth-place finish and the No. 4 Compuware Corvette C6.R to ninth place at the checkered flag.
The race started well for the twin Corvettes, with Jan Magnussen running fourth and Oliver Gavin fifth. At the 39-minute mark, the Corvettes were second and third before the first full-course caution period began. But Murphy's Law - "Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong" - was about to be invoked as the No. 3 Corvette went behind the wall to repair a power steering hose at 1:55 into the race, rejoining the fray with an eight-lap deficit to the leader.
The decisive moment occurred at 3:09 when the No. 3 Corvette pitted, with Magnussen replacing Johnny O'Connell. Magnussen was released from his pit box just as Emmanuel Collard was entering the adjacent stall in the No. 4 Corvette. The resulting contact damaged both cars. The No. 4 went immediately to the transporters where the Corvette crew replaced its front stabilizer bar and bodywork. The No. 3 suffered a punctured front tire and returned to the pits for repairs after completing a lap at reduced speed. - More

Great trip...great race

Once again, The Sebring 12hr was an awesome race. Corvette racing didn't have the race we all were hoping for, but it was still a great race. There is nothing like being there in person watching the cars and teams battling each other for 12hrs.
We had a great drive down, making it all the way to Dundee,FL on Thursday. We were @ the track by 8:30am on Friday. We got to see the beautiful Z06 Carbon Limited Edition and our friends from around the country. Quinn and Dave brought us a really nice scanner that was fun to use after we finally figured out how to use them...we had the nice man @ the scanner rental place program them for us.:) Our old girl even got picked in the car show on Friday. We had great weather, mid 70's and no rain.:rocker:
On Sunday we made it up to Bowling Green,KY and then home on Monday.
Hopefully some of you can make the race next year. It'll be here before we know it.

Jan Magnussen and Corvette Racing got far from the desired result at the classic 12 hour race at Sebring, when the first round of the American Le Mans Series, was held Saturday.

The race started promising as Jan Magnussen from his starting fourth grid position was involved in a close fight for position in the GT2 class. Six cars were like pearls on a string and postion changed several times. But Jan showed eminent driving and after several close duels in which several cars were side by side, Magnussen had worked his way through the field before he took the lead from Bergmeister - his rival from last year's crash at Laguna Seca - shortly before he, after an hour's drive, came into the pits for a driver change.

Johnny O'Connell was handed over the car, but he had to take an unscheduled pit stop after an hour and three quarters, when he had problems with the steering. It proved to be the power steering that had failed and the team had to drive the car in the garage, where it cost them eight laps before they were on track again. They were out of the battle for top placings in the close battle in the GT2 class, but it was not over for the team's problems.

When Jan Magnussen after about three hours drive got back into the car, it all went wrong. Jan Magnussen was sent out of his pit just as the team's second car at the time run by Emmanuel Collard, came in and the two cars collided. The collision was so violent that it took six laps to repair the second Corvette and Jan Magnussen reached only half a lap, before he punctured as a result of the collision. He slowly drove back to the pits and got a new tire and could then continue the race.

For the rest of the race the two cars drove quickly and constantly, hoping to get as far ahead as possible, as there were points at stake for the championship, and after the twelve hour drive the Magnussen Corvette reached the finish 11 laps behind the winner, in eight place a mere 27 seconds ahead of the team's second Corvette.

The GT2 class was won by Ferrari with Melo / Bruni / Kaffer ahead of the two BMW's with Auberlen / Milner / Werner and Müller / Hand / Priaulx.

"It's hard to be positive after such a race," Jan Magnussen said after the race. "The first hour was exactly the kind of racing I had hoped for and looked forward to, but then it all fell apart. First of all with a problem with the car and then the collision in the pits. I get the message that I can drive out and can’t see our second car, so unfortunately there was a miscommunication in the pits, which is very unfortunate but we must learn from that. Should we take something positive from the race, it was that the car drove better than it had done throughout the week. This race is preparation for Le Mans so we will continue to test an additional 12 hours Monday and Tuesday, so we can get really good data to work with. Our competitors have proven to be very, very strong - probably faster than we had anticipated - so we need a lot of data and experience with the car, because this is a new car and new engine we are running with."
