Front Plate Bracket

OBTW, Illinois state troopers are notorious for ticketing Illinois cars without a front plate.

Should have listened more closely to you, Gizmo ... came out of the Chicago Auto Show this evening - found a $50 ticket on my XLR; for not having a front license plate (I left it tucked underneath while it was parked in the McCormick Place parking lot). Looks like Chicago is trying to resolve their budget shortfalls one traffic citation at a time. Lesson learned - Keep front plate showing while anywhere in Chicago.

That blows...welcome to the Windy City

In a parking lot? That sucks, like shooting fish in a barrel. Out here in Los Angeles the airport police are notorious for perusing the airport parking lot and writing cars up for no front plate.
And I've been contemplating removing my front plate...

(the XLR doesn't go to the airport)

damn I love this forum...I removed the front plate frame from my XLR (not required in Alberta) and immediately noticed the ugly bolt holes:

quick search of the forum and bam! find this thread with the link to bumperplugs.com and problem solved!

Can't agree more about this forum - plus if something's not on here, just ask - someone else almost always knows the answer & will give it to you.

the bumperplugs arrived earlier this week and it was finally warm enough outside to try to install them. I was expecting the plugs to be large enough to cover the metal inserts, unfortunately the bumperplugs are only about 3/4 the size of the inserts. So, any suggestions on how to remove the inserts? or do I just install the plugs and live with it?

Most of the time, the license bracket is simply screwed into the plastic bumper cover; never have seen the inserts used. They look like the brass inserts that expand out on the backside; you may end up having to remove the bumper cover and grind them off from the backside of the bumper cover.

I have a license plate on the front too because Md has front license plate law and that where Roxy was when i bought her. This is just my opinion but I left it on and put on this custom plate cover that my wife bought me in Ocean City at the Boardwalk for a present! I did not no they made plugs but I got a lot of comments that they think the plate looks cool with XLR LOGO on it ;-)

I was so thankful that the previous owner didn't install the front plate bracket or the "wart". The front plate takes away from the front end. Only time a cop is gonna see the front of my car is when I'm passing him in a different direction and his jaw will probably be dropped anyways he won't be thinking of looking to see if I have a front plate. I'll take my chances with the amount the car gets out expectually park somewhere. As for our Canadian friend they really fastened that bracket down. Can you get some touch up paint either paint the thread bungs and leave or after painting just put those caps in. Maybe get larger diameter fasteners like what they use to hold the hood liners in or other plastic panels. The ones that are domed and have that Christmas tree spade to fasten to whatever. Then just paint with touch up? Good luck

Yes I agree. the states can save money in only having one plate. These cars of ours shouldn't have to have 2 plates. It takes away from the lines of our cars (all cars).:ugh::patriot::confused:

A couple years ago I did a ride-along with the Billings Polic Department. While driving along, we crossed one ofhte mail strrets in Billings, the officer lookkied over at me and asked, "Did that car have a front plate?" I said that I didin't notice. He turned at the next street, and turned back to the cross street on which the the car turned. He said, "Do you see it?" II said no; then he said, "There it is" and took off to catch it. He followed it for a while, and ended up pulling it over for a DUI. This is probably the reason for the front plate; they end up making more in fines, etc, that they lose in the making of two plates instead of one.
I tell you what, it's a REAL eye-opener riding along with a police officer; if your community offers this, do it...

Front Plate Mounting

xlr-front plate 1.jpgxlr-front plate 2.jpgWhen I saw the black XLR, like mine, in the movie, State of Play, I thought "something looks different about it". Then I realized that the front plate was mounted below the horizontal bumper instead of on it. I haven't moved it yet on mine but I'm thinking of doing it. I'm attaching 2 screen shots from the movie. I don't think it looks bad for those of us that are required to have a front plate.

I agree it looks better but the original holes where it was mounted will still be an issue to cover them?

Looks great, but you will block a lot of the air flow to engine.

I see that I'm reviving this old thread but I just installed a set of http://www.bumperplugs.com/ and they matched perfect. I too had the metal inserts, what I did was remove the inserts and then the plug head is large enough to cover the drilled holes. But the hole that was drilled in the bumper was to large to secure the body of the plug tight. I found push on lock nuts and reached behind the bumper and pushed it on the body of the bumper plug and they are tightly secured now.
