What they are calling the console is the metal and wood trim shifter plate with the cup holder.

The metal that covers the console is quite thin and is not in the Corvette,only in the XLR.

I agree, the root of the problem is the material.

Even the fact that GM never re-spec'd or reinforced the part wouldn't be such a problem if you weren't forced to buy the entire assembly.

If anybody's used the wood trim kits to cover up the damage or tried a dent removal company, I'd be interested to hear the results.
