My XLR/V(s)
2007 Liquid Amethyst
recently i purchased a nice 07 xlr , the non caddy dealer was nice enough to have put on brandnew front pads and rotors...
unfortunately the rotors are not oem GM parts cuz the cooling fins and the hat of the rotors are rusting badly.
i was hunting for info on the oem GM rotors as my rears were done at the caddy dealer about 1 yr ago and arent rusted at all.
i found out that GM is now running alot of their rotors thru an extra process called FNC coating. ferritic nitro carburizing, basically a 560degree oven bake for 24 hours, nitrogen rich atmosphere, which deposits a layer of nitrogen on the rotor, and also hardens the metal etc.

i was a the dealer today trying to confirm that if i ordered rotors from them they would be coated...
they had no clue what i was talking about. 3rd dealer who has no clue... not a good sign.
i even showed them my rear rotors, and lots of new rotors on their dealer lot that had similar silver/gray appearance, they said they must be painted by the manufacturer.
i saw a red 06 xlr on their lot,and it had the same silver/gray , no rust , front rotors, but the dealer could not confirm if i ordered them from them they would come like that. at 150 per rotor i was not taking the chance with a 35% restocking fee. plus they were pretty much useless jerks.
GM part # for the dealer part 88955509
their price was 150 each, online easily available for 71-77 each
this fits 04-09 4.6L XLR, any non V XLR
also fits a bunch of vettes from 05-13
cross referenced to AC DELCO part 177-1011
listed as oem GM part
found it at amazon for 67 each with free shipping
fits all the same years, pictures show it with the silver gray finish.
so i ordered a pair. tax was like 8 bux so total was 71 each.
also got a full set or porterfield ceramic pads.
i have had great success with the porterfield pads for low dust and good brake performance on my mercedes.
fancy wheels need a low dust pad or they look like crap after 3 days driving!
porterfield makes a few different compounds for their pads. track, street etc.
the high performance street pads are the R4S compound.
for the base XLR, and vettes the correct pads are
AP 731 R4S front set $153
AP 732 R4S rear set $102
this site had the best price i could find
Porterfield Brake Pad, R4S / R4 S / R4 / R4E
i will update when everything arrives and i verify that its correct.
then i'll install and enjoy rust free and dust free rotors and pads!!

ps
i didnt buy any rear rotors, but
rear rotors GM part # 88955498 dealer price??? unknown
AC Delco part# 177-0962
looks to be 55 to 60 bux all over the internet.

My 04 had the rotors changed every 10000 miles by the dealer. I did some research and found this was because of warping. When it started lugging on me because of warping I replaced them with drilled and slotted rotors I got online for $225. That was for 4 rotors and ceramic pads. 3000 miles later, still fine. One real surprise was that these rotors were zinc coated. It has been 3 years and they still look new. No rust at all. Very pleased with them. And the price was great.

Can you provide any info on where you scored that package for $225? I've seen the good drilled & slotted rotors going for around $125 each!

TIA

Tim

update,
got the rotors from amazon today. amazing how fast they can ship stuff!
have both the acdelco part # and GM part # on the box.
they are definitely same coating that is on my rear rotors.
not painted on i dont think.
i have no way to know for sure, but this must be FNC coating.
very happy i can install and get rid of the rusty ones currently on there.
i'll clean and paint these for future use. maybe just sell them.
only 2 weeks old!

i'm gonna sand blast the almost new rusty rotors and high temp paint them black:)
